Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in our solar system. Its spectacular ring system — made of billions of ice and rock particles — spans 282,000 km in diameter but is only about 10 meters thick on average. Galileo Galilei first observed Saturn's rings in 1610, though his telescope was too weak to identify them as rings. Saturn takes 29.5 Earth years to complete one orbit, meaning a single 'year' on Saturn spans nearly three decades of human time.
Design Notes: Elliptical Rings on a Pixel Grid
The 16×12 horizontal grid accommodates Saturn's signature wide-ring profile. The rings are rendered as thin horizontal bands of light tan and cream beads extending well beyond the planet body, creating the distinctive Saturn silhouette. The planet itself uses a warm golden-yellow to suggest its gas-giant atmosphere. The ring overlap in front of and behind the planet requires careful layering — this is what makes the pattern medium difficulty rather than easy.
