Luigi made his debut in the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros., created as a palette-swapped second player for cooperative play. His taller, slimmer build and green color scheme were chosen to visually distinguish him from Mario on the limited arcade hardware. Luigi has since starred in his own games β most notably the spooky 'Luigi's Mansion' series (2001β2019) β and has become a beloved character in his own right. His trademark shy, cautious personality contrasts with Mario's brave heroism, making him a fan favorite.
Design Notes: Green Cap and Mustache Symmetry
The 16Γ16 grid allows for excellent facial detail. The 8-color palette distinguishes Luigi from his brother Mario: green cap (instead of red), slightly different skin tone highlights, and the same signature mustache and large nose. The 'L' on the cap front is a critical 4-bead detail β without it, the character loses his identity. The pattern demands careful symmetry work on the mustache and eyes, placing it firmly in the hard category.
