Background: The Goomba

The Goomba is the very first enemy players encounter in Super Mario Bros. (1985) and has appeared in nearly every Mario game since. These mushroom-shaped enemies walk in a straight line and can be defeated with a single stomp. Despite being the weakest enemy in the franchise, Goombas are beloved for their angry eyebrows and grumpy expression. They were the last enemy added to the original Super Mario Bros. β€” designer Shigeru Miyamoto wanted an enemy that could be easily defeated, teaching players the basic stomp mechanic.

Design Notes: 10Γ—12 Pixel Composition

This 10Γ—12 grid (120 beads) captures the Goomba's iconic silhouette: a brown mushroom-shaped head that's wider at the top, tapered feet, and the signature angry eyebrows. The bushy black eyebrows are the most important detail β€” without them, it's just a brown blob. Two small white eyes with black pupils complete the menacing expression. The two feet at the base give it stability and character.

Ironing Tips

  • πŸ’‘Medium heat only β€” too hot and the beads over-melt and lose shape; too cool and they won't fuse.
  • πŸ’‘Keep the iron moving in slow circles β€” staying in one spot melts that area flat.
  • πŸ’‘Iron both sides and press under a heavy book while cooling to keep it flat.
