Snowflakes: Nature's Geometry
Every snowflake is a unique hexagonal ice crystal formed when water vapor freezes in clouds at temperatures below -10°C. The six-fold symmetry arises from the molecular structure of water ice. Wilson Bentley, a Vermont farmer, became the first person to photograph a single snowflake in 1885, proving that no two are exactly alike. In bead crafting, snowflakes are a beloved winter project because their geometric structure maps perfectly to square pegboards.
Design Notes: Six-Fold Symmetry on a Square Grid
The 12×12 grid captures the snowflake's essential six-arm radial symmetry using only 3 colors. The design balances visual weight between the central hub and the branching arm tips, creating an intricate look that belies its modest color count. The cool blue-white palette makes it ideal for winter holiday décor, gift tags, and seasonal garlands.
