The Universal Symbol of Joy
The smiley face was created in 1963 by commercial artist Harvey Ball in Worcester, Massachusetts. Commissioned by an insurance company to boost employee morale, Ball's original design — two dots and a gentle arc — took just ten minutes and earned him $240. Since then, it has become one of the most recognizable icons in human history, appearing on buttons, stickers, t-shirts, and digital messages across every culture and language. Its simplicity is its genius: a child can draw it, and anyone in the world understands its meaning instantly.
Design Notes: Maximum Impact, Minimum Pixels
At just 8×8 pixels with only two colors (Yellow #FFD700 for the face, Black #000000 for the features), this is one of the most accessible patterns in the entire library. The design works because the smile occupies the bottom third of the grid, leaving generous space above for the eyes. The 48 yellow beads create a warm, saturated background, while 16 black beads define the expression. Perfect for beginners, classroom activities, or as a first project for young crafters — it can be completed in under 15 minutes.
